austin city limits. october 3rd

THE VIRGINS

we got great spots for the virgins... and by 'great' i mean amongst all the 14-17 yr old girls dressed in bikinis and ready to scream for a guy in eyeliner. regardless of our surrounding company, the virgins are fun. donald cumming is lifelong friends with ryan mcginley, so i am already a fan of his. he also shamelessly wears green eyeliner with gold studs and comes on stage with a heineken and a cigarette. i mean, it is already 12:30 in the afternoon. plus they played the night before at an aftershow, so they've gotta keep it going.

i enjoy their music. it's pop. but they are what they are. lead singer donal cumming, with his meth-head set of missing teeth and pitted skin, sings of cocaine brunches and i believe he sings from experience. i actually think he had one this morning. but the kids (cause 23 is so much older) sing and dance to the groovy beats and get to stare at cute guitarist wade oats.

after a beer, small crowds, and no rain, we managed to hang out at the felice brothers before seeing !!!. i actually dont remember even hearing the felice brothers, because i was too busy planning the day. unbeknownst to me was mother nature plotting her unending downfall of rain.

CHK CHK CHK

'chk chk chk' most commonly referred to... but supposedly you can call them anything you'd like, as long as it is 3 repetitive exclamations. boom boom boom. shit shit shit. caw caw caw. but i guess stinking with the crowd on this one is the only way to actually identify this band.

AMAZING! i had SO so So much fun with this band. mainly because lead vocalist nic offer went all out. the rain had finally begun 10 minutes into their set, and panchos and umbrellas began to fill the crowd making it a sea of neon colors amongst a bleak midday sky. nic was all over the stage and all over the crowd, singing and dancing the day away. their music is a perfect mix of experimental electronica and just plain fucking awesome dance-funk music!

they story behind these guys is the 9 of them got together in a suburban nashville house and would do kung-fu in the morning and record the rest of the day. the records are fantastic, but the band's music truly comes alive in front of an audience. i am so happy to have danced my ass off for this hour long show... i just wish it had lasted longer.

GRIZZLY BEAR
now the crowd has arrived. hardcore. there were a lot of folk at chk chk chk, but grizzl bear, being that they were performing on a slightly smaller stage, created a larger and more packed in crowd. we planted ourselves on the extreme stage right side, right underneath the big screen. grizzly bear is attractive. i forgot after seeing such sub-par looking rock stars, what some handsome people on stage could look like. it also helps that their music is fantastic. "two weeks" always stands out for me, and of course it did this time. they rocked... much harder than on the album. i was thoroughly impressed, even without really seeing them. i was also anticipating our move to the front of the stage for the next act... bon iver. well, kind of "next" act. there was an hour between shows.

after grizzly bear, instead of the crowd dissipating, it seemed to funnel into a deeper, more compact conglomeration of totally soaked bon ivery inspired fans. the potties now had 10 minute waits attached to them, even though there were near 1,000 in the park. i did my deed, and was back, packed in... GREAT spot for the ever so emotional bon iver

BON IVER

with a full coat of beard and withered, stringy hair, justin vernon stepped on the stage through the vip bulk and began to do his own sound check. a full sound check it was. he must have checked every level himself, back and forth, making sure his finely tuned vocals would be relayed as exceptionally exquisite as they do off his first LP album, for emma, forever ago.

he shows his gratitude for the 40k+ people who are waiting in the pouring rain to attach themselves in their own way to his lyrics that have made us all grown to love him. he starts with blood bank... and i already have chills. he and the rest of his band are incredible musicians. unaffected by this crowd, no feeling of theirs is diluted in the playing of a song... it isn't a performance... it's more of a conversation between the band and each individual listener.

"skinny love" follows with a 40k+ chorus singing loudly and passionately behind mr. vernon as he continues to sing from his gut "my my my my my my my my". everyone is on the same page, knowing they have come to at least have this one experience. justin vernon allows us all into his final song once more, telling us to sing the refrain "what might have been lost" during the last part of "the wolves: act 1 and act 2".... he says once the music creshendos everyone just scream... and we all did just that. magical, really. music that moves!

GHOSTLAND OBSERVATORY

whuuuuuuut? was NOT expecting this!? in the best way possible. i mean i have their album but did not know they were austin natives. 2 guys, one a native american indian, the other a conservative looking man team up to make music that blurs the lines of what it means to be local favorites and world-wide stars. head man aaron behrens has been compared to freddy mercury and prince, while synthesizer and background vocals man thomas turner spits out beats that could hold their own against daft punk, the clash, and david bowie. these guys are true rock stars giving their audience a full light show and no time to stop dancing. the time of my life!!!!

we ended the night with some dave matthews... to chill us out and dry us off from the mix of dancing sweat and cold rain. what really stood out today was the electronic bands. i mean bon iver is in a league of his own, incomparable to any other in terms of lyrics and true musical talent... but those boys at chk chk chk and ghostland observatory made it worth my every dollar.

thom yorke is back at it

a surprise appearance in los angeles friday night and proof in video leaves me a very happy fan. thom yorke decided to spit out some of his new solo work with red hot chili pepper's flea joining him. it's wild to see. thom yorke had his shirt unbuttoned and everything. but his music still remains solid and true. i love his lyrics "dont bore us, get to the chorus, open the floodgates". this is kind of my mood right now... i'm ready for the chorus.

one song. one take. one cab.

this is the tag line for black cab sessions and they are rocking my world right about now. what a smart way to get an artist or band in an abnormal setting and play one of their favorite tunes... then broadcast it to the world. it also helps that the artists they choose to play in their car are all rad in their own ways. yay for originality and resourcefulness.

here's a favorite... i havent watched them all yet. i imagine i'll have a new favorite once i'm all done.

oh so good

i must say this show has been taking the cake. bryan cranston has proved worthy of winning 2 emmy's for his performance as a chem teacher gone meth dealer. i'm hooked. it is raw and dirty and desperate and intense. this show goes places that nothing else has even dared to touch. actors are stretched to their limits... and they end up on the other side and you ask yourself how the hell do they do it?

i'm catching up on all the episodes on dvd, and i must say i don't want it to end. it's addictive. it's frighteningly real. i need more of it.

"Lord of the Rings" seems like kind of a racist book. I mean, they don't even have one Tolkien black guy.

moving flash forward

i have to admit that it was not the youtube ads or the fact that both sonya walger of "lost" and brian f. o'byrne star in a new abc primetime drama. it was the picture of dominic monaghan that caught my eye and led me to watch this show. well, i saw him, then saw joseph fiennes, then chose to give this a ride.

i'm glad i did. i'm super excited about the potential. yes... it's very abc ish... fits right into the 8 o'clock spot... but it has a level of mass intrigue. a worldwide event that everyone can relate to. feels familiar.

the acting is superb... joseph fiennes plays an american detective... and is sizzling hot doing so. he and his wife have incredible chemistry... im fascinated. drawn in. ready for the next episode.
